First, I'd rather not think about what is right and wrong. I'd rather just get on with the living. There is right and wrong, but it varies, and we really do get most of it right, I think. I hope. We have others to thank for that - the guidance and love given to us.
But, in terms of wrong, in fact, well, I'm not the first person to know I'm wrong, sometimes. It is brought to my attention by another. There are other times, and we all have them were we replay events and realize that this or that could be the case and we should change that to have a better solution.
I'd rather not be wrong. I don't like being wrong. There's so much more to deal with - the change in plans and all that entails. Not the least of which is my ego.
However, I'd rather discover I'm wrong, than think I'm right when I'm not.
If I'm wrong, when I think I'm right I keep building on a foundation which isn't really there. I hate being wrong, but it beats the truth-less situation of where I'm wrong but I think I'm right.

it really is the little stuff
So ya' get a bunch a papers and all of the ones that need dates are dated, except for this one form. And it really doesn't have to have a date written on it when you get the form. For the purposes of this dicussion, "The forms" are defined here as the forms that have places for dates and signatures. It would be convenient to you if the date was listed. It ain't rocket science, but hey they seem to be very sure all the other forms had dates. Wby not this form? And they did write on this form, without a date written on this form, this form does has an expiry date on it that is X days from a given date to me on a completely different form. Where/how is the correspondence here?
And, it would be convenient to the person that will be given the form I fill out.
I'm just saying it ain't that convenient to me or the person that has to deal with this form.
Now the form, the little thing, I have to wander, does it really, I mean really does it matter. Well, now that depends, is it part of a larger pattern that matters?
The possibilities are ['yes','no','maybe']
The Yes possibility. The larger pattern that emerges from these small things shows it does matter. Well, then you need to watch this type of small stuff. You may even need to talk to someone that can advocate for you, or you might need to advocate for someone else, or yourself. Advocating can be laborious.
The No possibility. The larger pattern that emerges from these small things don't add up to anything that is troubling. Or you talked to someone and they are advocating for you! Or hey, you did what you could to advocate and it ain't going to change. (Nothing to see here folks, just move along, move along now.)
The Maybe possibility. More data is needed.
Now, what kinda of data can I get. I have my personal data, observations, etc. I have the experiences of family, friends, and others in the community. Well. My personal data is rather known to me, and so maybe I need to see if these small things are part of a larger pattern that matters to others? Sounding board.

first, before things rush in
A teacher of systems said that things rush in. Just enjoy the vacuum, it won't last
And no, this was not during his office hours, when he had just been enjoying the vacuum of his office. This was said in a class. But an office setting, maybe that's where he got the idea. Maybe.

"The successful scientist thinks like a poet but works like a bookkeeper." E.O. Wilson
First, good read today (From E.O. Wilson's _The Social Conquest of Earth_ page 275-276 Liveright publishing, 2012 )
"The successful scientist thinks like a poet but works like a bookkeeper.
I have not finished the chapter, but I wonder if Wilson will say somthing like:
... The successful artists thinks like a bookkeeper, but works like a poet ...
Well,I guess if the artist is going to make any money but is that the most important measure of success. If you are hungry, maybe.
Anyway, with the slant toward the scientist, I'm guessing he will not go there.
Okay, but what about engineers? This book is about eusociality, so maybe he'll say something like that.
But what does a poet think like?
The bookkeeping I get, that record keeping, logging, watchfulness, but what about the poet.

Keep it simple
First, wander for a simple solution. (Yes, wander.)
Respect the initial environment, both users grown accustomed to it and developers of it. People can disagree about what is simple. Learning about how it got this way can be useful and reduces the chance of making it too simple.
A solution in a given environment might not have a simple fix. One has what one has, initially. If the environment requires more elaboration, then consider changes to the environment.
Weigh changes to the initial environment required to simplify the solution to the overall cost of the the changes required. Making one item simpler by making one (or more) items less so doesn't make it (necessarily) simpler.
